We believe. . .

The Church of the Nazarene is a global network of churches organized in 1908.  Today, there are over 30,000 local Nazarene churches in more than 150 countries, with 2.6 million members.  The common thread throughout these churches is our shared beliefs, which we call the Articles of Faith.

Here is a summary of those beliefs:

  • We believe in one God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe in Jesus Christ, who being one with the Father, became like us to bring about our salvation.

  • We believe the Bible is the Word of God, and that it contains all truth necessary for faith and Christian living.

  • We believe man is born with a fallen nature, and we need God’s forgiveness for our sin.

  • We believe Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead; and by believing in Him, anyone can be forgiven and restored to a right relationship with God.

  • We believe when we are forgiven, our record of sin is wiped clean and we are spiritually born again, becoming a child of God.

  • We believe God calls us to be fully surrendered to Him as Lord and Leader of our life; and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can live victorious lives of freedom with pure hearts.

  • We believe the Holy Spirit living in and through us is evidence of our new standing as a child of God, and to our fully surrendered life in Him.

  • We believe those who have placed their faith in Jesus will have an eternal heavenly home with Him, and that those who reject Him will be hopelessly and eternally lost.

  • We believe Jesus will return, the dead will rise, and the final judgment will take place.

History of New Life

New Life’s journey began in 1983 as Evangelical Church of the Nazarene; a small group of people meeting in the Columbia Gas building in Bangs, OH. Through the faithfulness of this small group, lives around Knox County were transformed by the hope of Jesus Christ and this small group began to grow. In the search for more space, this growing church met in multiple locations through the years including the Foursquare Bible College, Mount Vernon High School, the home of Dr. Don Martin, Mount Vernon Middle School, the YMCA, Mansfield Road, Newark Road, Mount Vernon High School, and now at our current location on Harcourt Road.

Through the history of New Life Church, this group of people exemplified that the church is More Than Walls — it is a movement of God.

Our Staff

  • Troy McNichols, Lead Pastor

Troy has been at New Life since 2001 and has been instrumental in the formation and growth of what New Life is today. With a genuine heart for the people he serves, and a love for those he serves alongside, Troy has been an invaluable leader on the team at New Life. Troy and his wife Christa have three grown children—Cody, Taylor, and Caleb. Having grown up singing and playing southern gospel, Troy has successfully passed on the love for music to his three kids.

Proud of his appetite of an 8-year-old, some of his favorites include twinkies, pizza, and anything peanut butter. It is not uncommon to hear him talking about his affinity for westerns, The Andy Griffith Show, and sharing his most recent dad joke (he has quite the store house). Always up for a good time with his family, Troy loves spending quality time around the table playing games, laughing, and of course, eating pizza.

  • Tom Duncan, Executive Pastor

Tom joined the New Life team in 2007, bringing along his passion to see people dive deeper into their spiritual journey with Christ! Tom could be described as encouraging, supportive, consistent, and dependable—all of which contribute to make him an asset to New Life’s leadership. Tom and his wife April have two grown children, Tyler and Alysa, and cherish their beach vacations together. If it were up to Tom, he would be content watching or participating in any sport any day of the week. His competitive spirit is accompanied by a fascination of collecting vintage sports gear, thus his tendency to peruse Ebay, attend auctions, and shop antique malls and garage sales.

Though Tom would happily eat anything in front of him, his sophisticated palate gravitates toward soups of all kinds and decadent desserts—all highly specific—such as one favorite, a Swiss Maid black raspberry cream cheese fry pie! If you’re ever interested in sparking a conversation with Tom, be sure to ask him where to get a good bowl of soup or what his favorite dessert is!

  • Stewart Oswalt, Connections Pastor

Stewart has been at New Life since January 2021, and he has heart for helping people find meaningful community and fall more in love with Jesus! Stewart and his wife, Natalie, have three kids, Trey, Selah, and Judah, and they love all things outdoors. On the weekends, you can usually find the Oswalts hiking, biking, camping—all of it! Knowing this, it is no surprise Stewart finds running shoes and camping gear a necessary and worthwhile investment!

Some other favorites of his includes wood fired pizza, trail mix, a good book and coaching his kids’ sports! On a Sunday morning, you will most likely find Stewart talking with as many people as possible, connecting them with others, and reaching out to newcomers.

  • Ryan Stroop, Worship Pastor

Ryan joined the New Life team in 2021, ready to lead the church closer to God through worship. He is passionate about serving alongside the leadership team during the week and the worship team every Sunday morning. One could easily point Ryan out on stage by looking for the energetic guy dancing around with a guitar or the bouncing head behind the drum set. One thing is for certain, Ryan is very intentional with his music, and is passionate about excellence and authenticity.

Ryan and his wife Liz have three girls, Ella, Norah, and Josie. He loves spending time watching movies with his kids and going on dates with Liz. Originally from Philadelphia, Ryan would love to be asked to be a sportswriter for the 76ers or Phillies. Some other hands-down favorites include cheesecake and Raising Cane’s.

  • Mandi Downs, Kid Life Pastor

Mandi joined the New Life team in 2005 and has been an integral part of leadership ever since! From her love for the kids she encounters weekly to her awesome Kid Life team she works alongside, Mandi is passionate about New Life and loves what she does! Mandi and her husband Ryan have a four-year-old, Oliver. They love spending time at the beach or on the water and will gladly take up an opportunity to hang outside doing anything!

Aside from her love for her family and ministry, some of her favorites also include tacos, ice cream and all kinds of fragrances. It’s no surprise you could likely find her sniffing candles in Marshall’s and stocking her office drawer with scrumptious diffusers!

  • Ryan Wolfe, Teen Life Pastor

The newest addition to the New Life team is Ryan. Others-focused and passionate about being a support and presence for teens, Ryan is well-suited for guiding and growing Teen Life. Furthermore, he is hardworking, caring and humble, which makes him a great team player and leader at New Life.

Always up for a good dose of competition, Ryan loves spending time with his family playing games like Euchre, Trash, and Aggravation. Any other choice of time spent goes to coaching, watching or playing sports–primarily Tennis and Basketball. Ryan would choose a docuseries over a movie or TV show any day, and his vegging snack of choice are good old chips and salsa. Alongside his affinity for docuseries, he enjoys reading anything on leadership, spiritual formation, or personal improvement. Partial to his grandma’s cooking, Ryan would choose his grandmother’s spaghetti and cheesy bread for a last meal.

  • Ryan Farr, Sports Director

Ryan has been Sport’s Director at New Life for quite a few years now, and loves being a part of the leadership team. He is passionate about connecting with families in the community and giving them the opportunity to learn about Jesus and has found sports ministry to be an awesome place to make those connections. Ryan has proven a strong asset to New Life by providing his collaborative and innovator spirit.

Ryan and his wife Rachel have three boys, Colton, Mason and Easton, who all share their father’s affinity for sports. He loves spending a day with his family at Branstool Orchards, going shopping in Newark, followed by dinner out at Dickie’s BBQ! Some of Ryan’s other favorites include Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, pizza, and coaching all sports, of course. It’s no surprise, then, that Ryan often spends his free time reading the next, new article on coaching.

  • Stacey Wiles, Administrator

Stacey has been on the New Life team since 2019 and is truly the glue that keeps New Life together! She is dedicated to helping every Sunday morning run smoothly and is instrumental in the behind-the-scenes working of New Life! Stacey and her husband Ken have four kids, all between the ages of 16 and 20–Kayley, Bryce, Chelsey, and Brady. It’s never a dull moment in the Wiles household, and Stacey loves spending time with her family.

Some of her favorites include listening to podcasts, eating at North Main, and a good camera. Though Stacey loves Olive Garden’s Chicken Alfredo, she’d rather save the carb overload for her last meal of choice.

  • Beth Neighbarger, Assistant Kid Life Director

Beth Neighbarger has been a part of the New Life team for quite a few years now, and loves being a part of an amazing team in love with Jesus. Beth has been dedicated to serving in Kid Life and anyone who works with her or knows her would describe her as caring, generous, and a hard worker!

Beth and her husband Paul have four children, Joy, Grace, Hope, and James. As a family, their favorite thing to do together is to have game or movie nights! Whether it be going for a walk, sitting around a fire, or just being goofy, Beth loves spending her time with friends and family. If she had to be by herself though, she would choose to be cozied up in her hammock, reading a great book! A meat and potatoes gal through and through, her choicest last meal would be steak and mashed potatoes–with a side of green beans, of course! Not exclusive to her last meal, Beth is partial to a rich slab of Southside’s peanut butter cup pie!

  • Jana Yost, Office Manager

Jana has been a part of the team at New Life since the spring of 2022. Her role in the office is crucial and is a huge help to everyone. Jana and her husband Dan have three kids, Caleb, Austin and Sadie. Throughout the year, all three kids are in various sports and activities, so you can catch Jana and Dan at a lot of games cheering for their kids! The Yosts love traveling, and will often make a vacation of visiting family out of state.

A few favorites for Jana include Reese cups and Jersey Mikes, and she will gladly take either as gifts at any time. Known for being cold–even in the summer–it is not unusual to find Jana wrapped in a sweater or hoodie! Cleaning and exercising are her go-to stress relievers after a long day or on a Saturday morning, but she especially enjoys anything that looks like it needs to be organized. If given the opportunity, Jana loves to peruse Hobby Lobby for crafting supplies, decor, or just getting in the holiday spirit with their awesome showcases!
